Frequently Asked Questions

Introduction

Beginning counselling can feel like a big step, and it's natural to have questions. Here are some of the questions I'm most often asked. If there's anything else you'd like to know, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

What happens in the first session?

Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We'll explore what has brought you to counselling, what you hope to gain from therapy and any questions you may have. There is no pressure to share everything straight away—we'll move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes. Everything discussed during our sessions is confidential and handled in accordance with the BACP Ethical Framework. The only exceptions are where there is a legal or ethical duty to share information because there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or someone else. If this were ever necessary, I would always aim to discuss it with you first wherever possible.

How long is a counselling session?

Each counselling session lasts 50 minutes and is usually held on a weekly basis to provide consistency and continuity.

How much does counselling cost?

Individual counselling sessions are £50 per 50-minute session.

I also offer a free 15-minute consultation by telephone or online, giving you the opportunity to ask questions and decide whether I'm the right counsellor for you before committing to therapy.

Do you offer online counselling?

Yes. I offer counselling in person, online and by telephone, allowing you to choose the option that best suits your needs and circumstances.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no fixed number of sessions. Some people find short-term counselling helpful, while others benefit from longer-term support. We'll review your progress together and work in a way that best meets your individual needs and goals.

What if I don't know what to say?

Many people worry about this before their first session. You don't need to prepare anything or know exactly where to begin. Therapy is your space, and together we'll gently explore whatever feels important to you.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel or rearrange an appointment, I ask for at least 48 hours' notice. Appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice may be charged at the full session fee.

Still have a question?

If you can't find the answer you're looking for, I'd be happy to help.

Arrange a free 15-minute consultation and we can discuss your questions with no obligation to continue.
